Spaghetti Bolognese

Classic Italian spaghetti bolognese topped with Parmesan.


  • half a 400-500g pack of value minced beef
  • 1 medium onion (approx 185g), finely chopped
  • 400g of value tinned chopped tomatoes
  • 180g of value spaghetti
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan
  • 11/2 tbsp dried mixed herbs
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 200ml vegetable stock, prepared according to the packet instructions

Spaghetti Bolognese photo

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large saucepan and fry the beef mince for 4-5 minutes, or until browned. Season with salt and pepper, remove from the pan and set aside.
  2. In the same pan, heat 1 tbsp of oil and cook the onion and garlic over a low heat for 4-5 minutes, or until soft.
  3. Return the browned mince to the pan and stir in the tomato puree, tinned tomatoes, mixed herbs and vegetable stock. Bring to the boil then simmer, covered, for 50 minutes. Add a little water if the bolognese becomes dry.
  4. Towards the end of the bolognese cooking time cook the spaghetti according to the packet instructions.
  5. Season the bolognese with salt and pepper and serve with the spaghetti and Parmesan cheese.
